In the room: the organ plays only the notes of the song’s pentatonic scale – nothing can sound wrong. Tap the middle of the conga skin for the long open tone, the rim for the short one. Drag across the güiro ridges to scrape – cumbia güiro goes long on the beat, then two short ones: chhh-k-k. Keys: A … Ö organ, Q / W conga, E / R güiro, space = play. Conga and güiro are synthesised for now – real hits are on their way.
Pull the faders on “Caballo” or “Desierto”, send the melody into the spring or the tape echo, and sweep the wah over the whole band – a nod to the Peruvian chicha bands of the seventies with their fuzz, their organs and their echo.
Colombian and Peruvian cumbia, guitar-heavy chicha and a pinch of reggae in the organ: Los Babriks take you back to the golden age of cumbia – warm, hypnotic and made for dancing. Melodic guitar lines carry the songs, the organ drifts off into psychedelic places, percussion and bass keep the groove rolling.

Los Babriks were founded during the pandemic by Mauricio-Joran Ceseña – Mau, Germany / Mexico – who still leads the band from the bass. What began as a studio project grew into a live band from Munich: the first concert in September 2023 counts as the band’s birthday, and in May 2025 the album release party at Import Export in Munich was sold out.
Mau has played bass and guitar in reggae, ska and soul bands for years – with The Black Oak Roots Allstars, Doreen Shaffer, Stranger Cole and many more – and produces records together with aDUBta. Right now the line-up is on the move: new faces, same groove.
