the game
In reggae the guitar does not play on the beat but in between – on the “and” of every beat: one and two and three and four and. That short, muted chord is the skank.
Tap the amp (or ▶ RIDDIM) and the riddim starts. Then strike the guitar – or the big SKANK pad, or J / K / space on a keyboard. You never have to think about the chord: the riddim changes every bar between F minor and E♭, and the guitar always plays the chord of the bar you are in.
The dots show the bar: big dots are the beats, small dots the “and”s. Hit the small ones. Too hard? Switch on the original skank and play along.
a little studio near Rennes, Brittany
Ikobox’s studio near Rennes is the home of K-Gibi Records. A cagibi is French for a tiny storage room – and the label is “constantly searching for the mysterious dusty sound”.
Together with aDUBta he makes the Mamba Bite singles: all recorded, mixed & produced by Ikobox at K-Gibi Rec. Studio and aDUBta at Attic Roots Studio. On “So Far, So Close” and “Windrush Riddim” aDUBta plays drums & piano and Ikobox bass, guitar & percussion.
